Abstract The spatial patterns and processes of the search for human recreation are critical to recreation geography. There are many researches on spatial behavior of recreationist and spatial structure of the generating areas at present. However, those are mostly about the spatial structure of medium or large scale generating market while few about small scale for the interurban daily leisure activities. So it is very important to understand the leisure behavior of urban residents and the overall arrangement of urban leisure spaces. This paper employs the indirect distance which is transformed by travel time and the velocity of its corresponding traffic mode, to examine the spatial behavior characteristics of urban plaza's users with case survey of Taihu Lake Plaza, Wuxi, Jiangsu Province of China. Based on the above, the paper reveals that percents of plaza users decrease with travel time and distance increasing. However, there are some differences between percent change with travel time and spatial distance. Time-distance mostly concentrates in 30mins, but spatial distance extends abroad. Also, the paper finds that they have different decay modes as in the whole but still with some similarities. Curves of physical health training and city park activities are close to the plaza leisure activities, especially for the former. The number of consumers in Supermarkets has the slowest attenuation but that in bars has the fastest. In addition, the paper puts forward a spatial structure mode of obvious belts because of different travel modes. Considering time and traffic mode factors, the authors can more accurately measure the influence of distance on urban plaza activities. Above results and conclusion are of great significance to effectively estimate urban plazas' radius and plan urban public leisure space, and might be a great supplement about urban public leisure space research.
