Abstract After a review of domestic research on spatial differentiation of tourism phenomena, it is thought that the studies of tourism geography on spatial differentiation of tourism phenomena in China focus on such components of tourism system as tourist attractions, tourist origins and tourist flows, tourism industry and tourist resorts, while the equivalent studies on the regional effects of tourism development is insufficient. Based on a comparison with the equivalent studies abroad, combined with the tendencies of tourism development and research both domestic and abroad, it is proposed that tourism geography in China should pay more attention to the study of tourism-impact spatial differentiation. Also, the significances and main contents of tourism impact spatial differentiation study are addressed. The significances of the study can be concluded as following:(1) international and domestic tendency has led a shift of focus of both tourism development and tourism study, so the study of tourism impact spatial differentiation is accordant with the times background; (2) the study of tourism impact spatial differentiation offers a new visual angle for assessing the practical effects of regional tourism development objectively; (3) the study of tourism impact spatial differentiation is a main content of both tourism geography and tourism science. Also, some main contents of the study of tourism impact spatial differentiation are suggested:(1) the study of basic theories; (2) the study of indicators and mesures of tourism impact spatial differentiation; (3) the study of spatial differentiation rules of tourism impact; (4) the study of forming mechanisms of tourism impact spatial differentiation; (5) the study of optimizing and adjusting mechanisms of tourism impact spatial differentiation. The aim of the paper is to promote a further development of tourism geography and tourism science studies in China.
