Abstract Village-level development has great contribution to regional development. Many macro social economic issues can be investigated at the village-level. Also, the government policies are implemented there. And the theories are reflected in the village-level development. Village-level economy, academically, becomes a significant concern in China because villages are the fields to implement the government policies, especially the policies of sustainable development. This paper aims to summarize the literatures on village-level development of foreign countries for the reference of further research in China. The author reviews the recent literatures on the development of village-level economy studies. Based on a comprehensive review of these researches, the author defines the village-level economy, then summarizes the features of village-level economic development, also he reveals the new trends in the study of village-level economy from the following aspects, (1) village-level industrial economy's contribution and its operation mechanism; (2) the responses of village-level economies to the external world support; (3) the factors which have effect on the village-level economy from both external and internal environment; (4) the scale transfer of village-level economy; (5) the resource base of village-level economy; (6) the coordination of the systems of human being and nature. Based on the analysis above, the paper points out that further research on village-level economy should be done from the following aspects (1) the developing environment construction of the village-level economy; (2) self-developing capability of the village-level economy; (3) the structure and dynamic polarization of the village-level economy; (4) comprehensive application of methodologies in the village-level economic study; (5) summarization and comparison of village-level economies of various scales; (6) emphasis on the study of village-level economies in China.
