Abstract The structure of urban nodal region which unifies the relation between cities is an important research filed in urban geography studies. This paper mainly discusses the succession variation of nodal region. Based on the analysis, the authors establish the whole cognition of nodal region alteration. This paper provides a case study of Shandong Province. the results show that, firstly, regional integration and fragmentation nodules coexisted in nodal region of Shandong province in 1932-1979. New nodal areas include Zhangdian, Qingzhou, and Gaomi which are along the Jiao-Ji Railway, Dezhou, Yucheng, Yanzhou and Zaozhuang which are along Jin-Pu Railway as well as Heze, Dongying, Laiyang. Boshan, Zhoucun and Linqing lost their position of nodal cities. Most of the new nodal cities have second-level stations for material supplying, and cities which lost their nodal position do not have second-level station. Secondly, the scope of the nodal regions changed obviously in 1932-1979. Jinan nodal region went eastward into mountainous area in the middle and the north of Shandong province, and went southward to the neighborhood of Ji-Pu railway in southwest of Shandong province in 1932-1979. Western part of southwest region in Shandong retracted because of the expansion of Jining nodal region. Qingdao nodal region expanded to mountainous area in the middle of Shandong and Shandong Peninsula. Jining nodal region extended to southwest and middle of Shandong Province. Weixian nodal region retracted from the eastern edge of mountainous area in the middle of Shandong, and expanded to the east along Jiaolai rift valley. Yantai nodal region extended from the counties in the northeast of Jiaodong to the Jiaodong peninsula. The second-level stations of supply and sale system, played the vital role in the nodal region expansion and the retraction. Thirdly, the relation pattern of nodal region has changed from the Christaller structure which is simply hierarchical link to Preud structure which is complexly hierarchical, horizontal and upwards link in 1932-1979.
