Abstract This study is conducted on the base of county level and is measured by indexes of GDP and per capita GDP. The results shows: (1) The total economic disparity of county level in Chengyu Economic Zone gradually enlarges. The high-developed areas are mainly distributed over the urban regions of Chengdu and Chongqing. Moreover, the number of undeveloped areas is in the majority. The phenomenon increases gradually as time goes on, which indicates that the whole economic development is still at a comparatively low level. (2) So far as economic growth patterns are concerned, the polarization patterns are fragmentarily distributed over South Sichuan. The low-speed areas mainly cluster in the northeast of Sichuan and Chongqing. The driving-force of highways as the developing axes is still unconspicuous and the vast regions are still in the backward state, although a large number of highways have been built and some old ones have been reconstructed especially since 2004. (3) Through the index of economic density, some results can be found: the total relative disparity of Chengyu Economic Zone is up to 73.29%, and the relative disparity of Chengdu region is lower than Chongqing one-hour region, but the disparity of the overall Sichuan areas in Chengyu Economic Zone is larger than that of the Chongqing areas. (4) On the whole, the space structures of the economic developing level, the ability of economic growth and the economic density are almost consistent with each other. A circular space structure centered on the urban districts of Chengdu and Chongqing is formed and this framework constantly strengthens in the Chengyu Economic Zone. At the present stage, the polarize function of the core regions is dominating and the regional economic development is more likely to be imbalance. Based on the above analysis, in virtue of the opportunity for establishing National Overall Planning Regional Trial Zone of Comprehensive Coordinated Reform, the core districts should be continued getting development increasingly so that their economic driving effects can be enlarged greatly. At the same time, new developing axis should be brought up, more investment and favorable economic policies should be put into the lagging regions so as to achieve comprehensive and harmonious development in the Chengyu Economic Zone.
