Abstract On the basis of the connotation analysis of the coordinate development, constructing the index of the coordinate development from three aspects of the divergence between rural and urban areas, select the 2000 to 2008 period, this paper not only discusses the varied degree of the coordinated development between urban and rural areas of 31 provincial unit in China, but examines the evolution pattern and its mechanism of the level of coordinated economic development between urban and rural areas in the four sub-region(that is: the eastern region, the western region, the Northeast region and the central region) in China as well. It presents that, from 2000 to 2008, the level of the coordinated development of urban and rural areas of China is overall upward, the index value of coordinated development of urban and rural is increased from 0.00627 in 2000 to 0.99 in 2008. It is shown that, in recent years, the policy effects of China's support and benefit agriculture is remarkable. For the four sub-regions, in general, the eastern and western regions are gradually coordinated between urban and rural development, while urban and rural development in central and northeastern regions decreased coordination. In the eastern region, urban and rural areas basically realize common prosperity and step into the advanced stage of development: the integration of urban and rural areas and the western area is lower level of coordination. The northeast area, in 2002 as the inflection point, decreased significantly after the first rise slowly, reflects the revitalization of northeast old industrial base strategy and the abolition of agricultural tariffs policy implementation effects began to show. Traditional grain producing areas of urban and rural dual structure of the economy are still outstanding, rural issues are still very serious. By calculating the changes of difference between urban and rural residents' income, the spatial pattern evolution of the overall coordinated development between urban and rural areas in Chinese province level can be further shown.
