Abstract

The well-known geographer David Harvey believes in the spatial correlation. He thinks only within the correlated space, the substantial content of modern society can be discussed and understood. From the perspective of the spatial correlation, historical and cultural blocks are not only a space with street, architecture, shops and other objects, but also a space which links the people's activities and strengthens their sense of belongingness and identity. From the perspective of urban development, the historical and cultural blocks are regarded as unique places. Such places are unique because they are the locations where the cities' history and culture can be found; and they are also locations where modern urban life is reflected. Through a long period of commercial evolution, the unique atmosphere is formed around the historical and cultural blocks. The blocks provide human being's psychological needs of nostalgia, and demonstrate the multi-layer intrinsic value of material and non-material aspects in them. This article is to discuss the historical and cultural blocks with the concept of "The Spirit of Place". The author illustrates the essence of such spirit inside the historical and cultural blocks. The author thinks the essence includes the special wish consciousness and sense of collective identity in a certain region. The author studies the relationship between the spatial characteristics and the spirit of the place, and utilizes the result to understand the ideological context of urban space and blocks. Various aspects of spatial characteristics are studied, including the isomorphic sensor of history and region, the revival of Pop Culture, the construction and reflection of social relations and so on. From the studies, the author concludes that from both the physical aspects of the environmental space, and the relational aspects of the social space, the historical and cultural blocks with a unique atmosphere, actively creates the contextual meanings, during the process "the Spirit of Place" is born.
