Abstract Since the new century, China's economy has undergone great transition, mainly from a socialist economy to a socialist-market one. At the same time, the influence of the globalization on China's economy also has been increased. Under such circumstance, the spatial structure of the urban network in China has been constantly changed. But this process is largely under-studied. Based on the location data of commercial banks in China, we use techniques of social network analysis and analyze the changing spatial structure and the urban network in China between a transitional period of 2001 and 2016. It is found that the structure of the urban network in China has transformed from a hub-spoke one to an interlocking one, in which both connection strength and number of links between cities in China have been great improved. While at the same time, the results show both trends of concentration and decentralization of China's urban network.
