Abstract

Since export is playing a more and more important role in China's economic development, it is essential to discuss how Asian regions influence China's export. This paper divides Asia into three types of regions, including the developed region, China, and the other developing regions, in order to figure out the relationship in export between China and the other Asian regions. Firstly, the authors apply an empirical model, whose parameters indicate the character of the relationship, to study the export spillover among these three adjacent regions. As great changes have taken place after the Asian financial crisis, this paper analyzes the two separate periods of before and after the Asian financial crisis (AFC) respectively, using the trade data of these regions from 1985 to 2005. Secondly, results got from the model are analyzed. Before the Asian financial crisis, China had cooperative relationship with the developing regions in Asia, but competitive relationship with Japan, the only developed country in Asia. After the Asian financial crisis, both the cooperative and the competitive relationship are intensified. Reasons are given to explain such results according to the various materials. The paper holds that Japan and China are rivals in the world market due to the capital law of searching the maximal profits. The competition between China and Japan in the world export market is ostensible and temporary. Japan should adjust its industrial structure, transfer those disadvantaged industries to the developing countries, and focus on the High-Added-Value products and components for consolidating its advantageous position in export market. Finally, the paper argues that since geographical adjacency brings lower transportation cost, there is beneficial environment and a splendid future for China and the other Asian developing regions to cooperate in the global specialization system. In conclusion, the explanations above indicate the interdependent relationships between China and the other Asian regions, and further corporation in commercial trade will build up a more beneficial environment for the global specialization system.
