Abstract This paper firstly reports the evolution tendency and factor decomposition of the regional economic disparities from 1990 to 2004 in Guangdong province. It finds that the general disparity of the whole province has been enlarged obviously, but the interregional disparity between three areas and intraregional disparity in the Pearl River Delta, the intra-sectional disparity of secondary industry and that of tertiary industry, have influenced the general disparity at most.
Based on the conclusion above, the paper then discusses some fundamental ways for reducing the increasing enlarged regional disparities of Guangdong in a market economy, which includes such aspects as policy principle, executive route, industrial strategy and spatial strategy.
At last, the article puts forth a series of policy suggestions for shortening the regional economic disparities in this province, such as spatial diversion of regional preferential policies, declination of public investment, regional economic collaboration, reformation of household institutes, migrate people to job and migrate job to people, etc.
