Abstract Population growth, including the natural growth and the mechanical growth, will have a great impact on the region's socio-economic development, while it is affected by many factors, such as political, historic, economic and other natural factors and so on. Being one of the rapid population-growing regions, Xinjiang's annual population growth rate was 2.79% in the last 50 years, which was higher than the national average of 1.54%. The population growth in Xinjiang has mainly been caused by two factors. Firstly, the high birth rate leads to the high natural population growth rate. Xinjiang's annual natural population growth rate was 17.51‰ in the 56 years from 1949 to 2004, higher than the national average 16.15‰. Secondly, lots of immigrants resulted in the massive population growth during the 1950's and the 1960's. Because of migration, the total number of pure increased population was 257.22×104 by 1967. This means that, the annual pure in creased migration had exceeded 150,000 in this stage. After 1968, the natural growth was the main trend of population growth. The population growth also differs from nationalities to nationalitites. The annual growth rate of Han, Man and Hui was much higher than the regional and national average, while the growth rate of Uygur, Kazak, Kirgiz, Mongolian, Xiba, Tajik, Uzbik, Dagur was higher than the national average and lower than the regional average. But the population of Russian and Tatar are decreasing year by year. The spatial pattern of population distributions in Xinjiang are as follows:Western part of Xinjiang has more population than the Eastern part, while the North has more than the South. Most of the population in Xinjiang are concentrated on the oasis belt which is located on alluvial fans at the intersection between mountains and basins, whereas the population was very small at the centers and margins of two large basins. The whole trend of the population growth in Xinjiang is that, the population density in whole Xinjiang is increasing repidly, while the area which has the higher population density is increasing and the area which has the lower population denstiy is decreasing.
