Abstract Extant research on ethnic tourism and social gender mainly proceed in two approaches:one emphasizes the impact of tourism on social gender, especially its apparent impact on feminine, holding that actors' behavior are a kind of passive adaption to social structure (culture); while another focuses on actors themselves. The above two opinions represent two different theoretical viewpoints and both contribute to improve the understandings of relationships between ethnic tourism and social gender. But they splitted the interactive relationships between individual actors and social structure (culture) more or less. The research deflects toward individuals or social on the contrary, offering no integrative insight of how individual actor and social interact with each other in this process. Based on the analysis on the defects of current studies' splitting ethnic tourism and social gender, the article put forward the concept that the above two can be unite into one under the framework of Bourdieu's theory of practice. Then, taking Jinkeng terrace tourism in Longsheng county and the evolution of Hongyao women' role as survey objects, the interaction mechanisms between two objects are well explained via four key terms of Bourdieu's practice theory-field, habitus, capital and strategy. The conclusion indicates that the change of field provides the room for the functioning of social gender, relying on the form of the capital it owns in varied fields, different social gender is able to realize the transformation of different capital functions through effective internalized strategic practice and externalized preference, which forming and consolidating the emerging of habitus, and unfolded via the optimization of field structure and improvement of field function in fine.
