Abstract This paper discusses mainly the formation and development of ancient town in China from Xia dynasty to Warring states, points out that the shape, she and site of ancient town are related with the natural and social environments, the shape is affected mainly by resource environment, the size is related with developing level of economy and adminsistration rank,and the site has something to do with these factors such as domination and stability of country, economic development of ancient towns. Finally, this paper discusses the applications and methods of remote sensing in investigation of ancient towns.
