Abstract The environments of Nanjing's urban waterfront have richened the unique elements that contain mountains, rivers, ancient walls, woods and deltas. In Chinese history, Nanjing was capitals for ten dynasties. It origin from the upside of Qing Huai River, a branch of Yangtze River. Only last hundred years the city developed rapidly alone Yangtze River as the demands of economics. But the major function in the region was manufactures and harbors. At present the ecology and tourism will be put as important places for contemporary landscape plan in Nanjing for sustainable development under use natural and human resources. Alone the line of Yangtze River of Nanjing's part, we investigated the natural and cultural resources. My research analy zes on the elements of the environment of the waterfront in history and contemporary, and further rise up the principle ideas for landscape planning:Stop the stone quarry and sands dig and conservative natural environment. Reorganize the units and institutes and Built a continue green way alone waterfront. Open and divided three layers for landscape planning:first layer is to plan the countryside, deltas, bridges and harbors beside waterfront. Second is to plan the urban buildings, third is to plan the remote mountain ranges as the background, On basis of the former research, my study concluded to divide six landscape districts:the landscape in western region is as modern residential quarter, the Xiaguan waterfront display the transportation harbors and the experiences of city hundreds history, the Mu and Yan Mountain range remain their natural cliff, wild scenery and historical relics, Deltas keep its countryside ecology and picturesque landscape, the Dachang waterfront display the modern industrial scenery, the Pukou&Zhujiang waterfront display the modern cityscape.
