Abstract  Based on the population and economic data from 2001 to 2012 in Chongqing, this paper computes the geographic concentrations of population and economy. The geographic concentration is regarded as an effective indicator to measure spatial distribution of population and economy by integrating the factors of regional population, economy, and area. Then, the coupling indicators are employed to monitor the mutual coupling characteristics and spatial distribution classification of population and economy. Both the overall and the local spatial autocorrelation analysis on the coupling indicators of population and economy are carried out by using Geoda and ArcGIS software. At last, this paper establishes the coupling degree model and the coupling coordination model of population and economy development. The results demonstrate that, 1) the overall level of population and economy in Chongqing has good developing tendency, but the differences in regional development are significant. 2) the geographic concentrations of population and economy with the distinctive spatial distributions show the general tendency featured by, "one circle is high and two wings are low".The counties of economic advanced type in Chongqing are increased; those of economic coordination type are partially transferred; those of economic development type are increased; those of economic backward type remain essentially unchanged. 3) The coordinated development level of population and economy in Chongqing is not balanced.
