THE IMPACT OF TOD ON RESIDENTS' COMMUTING ACTIVITIES:A CASE OF BEIJING |

Abstract Transit-oriented-development is a planning pattern that encourages public transit transport in neighborhood design and community development, which emphasizes public transit with mixed land use at a highdensity level, thus promoting a walking-friendly and diverse environment. TOD is also widely regarded as a model of low-carbon city or sustainable urban development by planners and policy makers, because TOD is also important to promoting use of green transports. However, the academic researches still confused and argued about how TOD promote people to use green transports, especially in commuting, and what's the key element of it. The researchers holds two different opinions. Some believes that the neighborhood design and built environment is the key element that affects the travel behavior of commuters, while the other alerts the more important function of personal attitudes. In Chinses context, there also lacks the commute study in a TOD environment. The answer to this scientific question has significant effort to understand the commute choice and policy making. This study aims to shed light to this question by making an empirical research of Beijing through the field investigation and quantitative model. Based on the previous researches on TOD and travel behavior, our study gathers five parts of elements, including mode characteristic, socio-economic attributes, build environment, traffic design and travel attitude, to make the MNL model. Compare to other studies, the mode efficiency, traffic convergence, and different travel attitude for diverse command and planning are innovatively concerned. The model controls socio-economic, travel preferences, mode efficiency and other factors. The results of regression analysis show that the land diversity, the traffic convergence between bus and metro, the commode efficiency, have a significant influence on commute mode.
