Abstract  Over the last two decades, there has been a tendency toward studentification becoming a global issue and closely interacting with urban spaces. Western urban geographers were the first to pay attention to "studentification" as an urban phenomenon and start theoretical construction of it systematically. However, academic study on the indigenization process of the studentification theory in the Chinese context is still in its early stages. On account of this, this paper begins by illustrating the phenomena of studentification in the West and in China, and different historical backgrounds from which the theory of studentification has been constructed, and then goes on to demonstrate the necessity of thinking over the indigenization process of the studentification theory. By critically examining the Western and Chinese (unfledged) theoretical constructionism of studentification from the dimensions of conceptualizations, key questions, theories, and methodologies, this paper finds the theoretical emphasis that are common to both Chinese and Western research and suggests some prospective approaches and methods to study studentification in China. In particular, this paper recommends the following three theoretical focus to be worthy of attention, namely the distinct characters of transient studentification in China, the evolution of urban space towards social segregation or mix, and the future of Chinese studentification as influenced by a combination of economic, social, political, and cultural factors.
