Abstract With the rapid delevopment of economy in China since the reform and opening up,the prosess of socio-spatial restructure of the city is speeded up.The 18 years from 1982 to 2000 are very important periods for China to make the transition from a planned economy to a market economy, therefore, the study on the transformation of urban socio-spatial structure cannot ignore this important stage. The paper discusses the urban restructuring and differentiation of socio-spatial structure of Hefei between 1982 and 2000 based on the data of the third census in 2000,the fourth census in 1990 and the fifth census of Hefei in 2000, supported by the arc GIS, and the information entropy and index of dissimilarity are used to analyze the characteristics of socio-spatial differentiation in Hefei Area during the transition period from 1982 to 2000. The conclusions can be summarized as the following: 1)The socio-spatial differentiation and reconstruction of Hefei Area during the transition period is very apparent, the range of 11 km from the old city center is distributed in the pattern of concentric zone, and the 1.5 km and 1.5-5 km are very typical. 2)The authors find out that the average spatial segregation index fell from 0.359 in 1982 to 0.216 in 2000 in Hefei Area, which shows that the degree of isolation of urban interior space reduced significantly, and the mixed residences increased gradually.3) The information entropy values fell from 3.167 in 1982 to 3.135 in 2000 in Hefei Area, which indicates that the socio-spatial reconstruction process of Hefei Area is relatively small but orderly. Finally, the authors explore the socio-spatial differentiation and reconstruction of Hefei Area from the history of urban development, urban planning, the drive of market economy and so on.
