Abstract Qing dynasty has been a turning point of land utilization in Horqin region since several centuries. Based on reconstructing the process of appearance and expansion about cultivation and summarizing the space-time characteristics of development about cultivation in Horqin region in the Qing dynasty, the paper analyzes the natural and human facto rs which exert influence on the development of cultivation, and holds that cultivation in the Qing dynasty didn't bring about land desertification on the large scale, though Horqin region has changed from the nomadic area to the interlocking area between cultivated land and grazing land for about 200 years.
