Abstract When urban area expands to a certain extent, citizen mobility becomes the most important effect on urban development and its internal spatial structure. The adjustment of the latter will,in turn, promote new citizen mobility. So is the case in Shenzhen City, the first special economic zone of China. Based on case survey data, this paper examines individual and household characters of Shenzhen's families which migrate one or more times. According to the evolution of urban planning and urban internal structure, four stages are then classified to cite time difference of citizen moves. The spatial difference is so evident in and between districts that come into being two types of citizen moves in space. Though market economy manages the whole development of Shenzhen, involuntary moves brought by allocated houses by DANWEI account for the majority of moves. In the following years, when situations, such as finance and policies, permit, citizens tend to move to the central area.
