Abstract Town-and-village system is one of the important parts in the research of rural community planning. And it is the key to the balance of urban and rural development. The necessity of the study can be summarized into two aspects. First of all, the extent of rural communities can be well decided only when the townand-village system is reasonable. Secondly, the spatial organization of villages in Loess hilly-gully region is confusion and the grade of villages in this area is not obvious. Thus more efforts should be made in this area on the study of Town-and-village system. However, there is not enough research on this topic. There are three gaps in the study of Town-and-village system:(1) Most of the studies on this topic focus on the assessment of the comprehensive strength of administrative villages through population and economic data.(2) In the selection and quantity control of central villages, in few studies the fact that the development of villages is unbalanced has been noticed.(3) In most of the studies, only market-towns and villages have been taken into consideration in the selection of central villages, which is not enough because designated towns and the county centers should also be taken into consideration. In this paper Angou Town was taken as study area. The intensity and trend of interpersonal contact between towns-villages were analyzed using Social Network Analysis. And the spatial distribution of town-and-village system was got based on the spatial patterns of interpersonal contact between towns-villages, terrain surface, road distribution, and the overall properties of the watershed. The result showed that the administrative villages in Angou Town can be divided into five different Town-and-village systems.
