Abstract Yifu Tuan's thought of place and space is the core of his humanistic geography, and it reveals the intrinsic relationship between man's existence and the two kinds of geographical environment of place and space from multiple dimensions of sense, emotion, aesthetics, presenting a brand new perspective of knowing place, space and reconstructing place. Yifu Tuan's writings are descriptive rather than theoretical, and it is not easy to have a theoretical framework of his thought, and the study on Yifu Tuan's humanistic geography in the academic circles at home and abroad mainly focuses on the brief evaluation and introduction of its philosophical foundation, research method and research content, and the systematic research is still inadequate. On the basis of predecessors' research results, based on the detailed study of Yifu Tuan's famous works, the paper makes a systematic and preliminary theoretical study on Yifu Tuan's thought of place and space from the perspectives of ideological content, historical origin, academic evaluation, subject influence and contemporary value. The author argues that the formation of Yifu Tuan's thought of place and space originates from his unique life experiences, his lifelong obsession with exploring the meaning of life and philosophical position of phenomenology and existentialism. It is argued that Yifu Tuan believes that place and space are indispensable opposite complementary factors in a happy life, which represent reality and stability, freedom and vision respectively. His thought has made a great impact on not only geography, but also philosophy, psychology, environment, aesthetics, literature and other fields. The study plays a positive role in having a further insight into and reflection of the intrinsic relationships between place and man, space and man, improving man's living environment, and promoting the coordinated development of human and geographical environment, and provides a new idea of easing the identity crisis and environmental crisis and maintaining the spirit of ecology and environmental ecology.
