Abstract Borders, and especially international borders, have long been a prominent theme in political geography. On the one hand, borders between states demarcate the territory and jurisdiction of states; on the other, there is talk of the disappearance of borders, at the very least, their declining significance in an era of globalization. In the past 20 years, Sub-regional cooperative research has experienced three changes in research direction: the first is the research of the sub-regional Economic Cooperation; The second is the research of non-economic effects of the sub-regional economic cooperation; The third is the research of non-economic factors and non-economic areas of collaboration of the sub-regional cooperation. Meanwhile, the non-traditional border security is emerging apparently. The above three aspects have a close relationship with each other, and can change into each other under certain conditions. The triple function of national borders and their interactions and they can be transformed into each other determines that it process national bounder more complicated. On the basis of analyzing the relationship among the three aspects, we have put forward such optimized ideas as trapezoidal strategic mode, rational and quantitative evaluation, and establishment of the multi-main body and multi-level coordinated institutions to optimize the combination of the country border.
