Abstract Social public services, basic component of public services, constitute the primary part of social developments. The state of social public services exerts great influence on people's life and work, the quality of human capital, the social stability as well as a long-term and sustainable economic development. In this sense, the scientific analysis of the state and mechanisms of the spatial differentiation of social public services in China may not only provide an essential reference for the formulation and practice of the equalizing policy of social public services, but also allow us to explore the research domain of the spatial differentiation of regional developments. This paper designs an index system of the levels of social public services, with which a measurement has been taken to the social public services in all provinces in China since 1990. On the basis of the measurement, this paper systematically analyses the process, features and mechanisms of the spatial differentiation of social public services in China since 1990. The results indicate that the spatial differentiation of social public services generally reach a higher extent and evidently polarizes-the level of social public services is higher in the east than in the west. The spatial differentiation process of social public services was V-shaped from 1990 to 2005, and the spatial differentiation extent of social public services was in a process of reduction. The spatial frame of social public services stepped into a harmonious state from 1990 to 1994, but the spatial differentiation has been intensified since 1994. On the one hand, the spatial differentiation extent of social public services continued to increase, and the gap between the former and the differentiation of economic developments continued to be closed; on the other hand, the uneven spatial state of social public services, with a representation of social public services level higher in the east and lower in the west, has gradually taken the form.
