Abstract Practice teaching is an important issue in the education tourism. It concerns the whole education quality, the development of education institutes and the learning goals of the students. The authors point out that the practice ability is strongly stressed in the tourism industry. So, practice teaching should be paid more attention to in tourism education which had been exploring and trying to find out the way of development for a long time in China. Tourism practice teaching has huge contribute to the education quality. So, many education institutes have already carried out the practice teaching and related work. For example, arrange some practical curriculum, set up the practical lab, and make the cooperation with the enterprises. However, there are some problems and defects. This paper aims to make a comparison of the practice teaching of the major of tourism studies in tertiary education between China and foreign countries. Education of tourism in foreign countries experiences long term development which can provide good reference for China, especially in the field of the practice teaching which is significant in the reform and development in tourism education. However, it just stays at the primary stage at present. The authors insist that it is urgent to reform and develop the practice teaching in tourism education to enable the students can meet the demand of the employment. In this paper, the authors make a comparison between China and foreign countries in novitiate, in-class practice, professional inspection, specialized practice, investigation practice and social practice which are contained completely in practice teaching to analyze our current situation and problems of the practice teaching in tourism education. At the same time, the paper provides the successful example of foreign practice teaching in tourism education, and tries to seek the way of development and apply the experience in the context of China tertiary education.
