Abstract:Using industrial data of 286 cities, the author computes specialization and diversification level and analyzes characteristics, phase evolution of specialization and diversification in Chinese cities. The main results show that: 1)as a whole, from 2003 to 2009, specialization level of Chinese cities was gradually rising, and trend of diversification was opposite; 2)compared with central and western China, specialization level of the developed eastern cities were lower, but grew fast; 3)cities with the highest specialization level were mostly mineral resources-based areas, and cities with the highest diversification level were mainly areas where manufacturing industry occupied a large proportion; 4)from the regional perspective, cities with higher specialization level located mainly in central and western areas, and provincial capitals and developed eastern cities were more diversified; 5) diversification level varied in the same direction with population size and income level. The results gained in this paper are beneficial for adjustment of industrial structure and regional harmonious development for central government. Firstly, for cities which products rely deeply on mineral resources, the keys to economic sustainable development are that using new technologies and procedures, promoting efficiency of resources utilization, developing up-stream, down-stream industries and lengthening the industrial chain. Secondly, for advanced cities, utilizing the existing industrial bases and comparative advantages and optimizing industrial structure are the core factors which decide the long term competitiveness. At last, the conclusions also show that it is very important for regional harmonious development to guide cities adjusting and optimizing industrial structure according to industrial and regional differences, narrowing the gap of economic developmental level and income, and avoiding vicious competition and redundant construction.
