Abstract：The development of urban social geography in 1960's was summarized systematically in this paper. The authors think the theory of socio-spatial dialectic,which stresses that the relationship of man-environment,including physical environment,social environment,constitutes the basis of urban social geography,should be the theoretical basis of urban residential differentiation research.
The interacting process of man and environment can be regarded as dialectic:human producing,mediating urban space,meanwhile the space where they live and work is also their physical and social background. On the other side,value,attitude and behavior also impact on the development of neighborhood and community. In this paper,the authors firstly introduce the development of socio-spatial dialectic,and then point out its research field.
