Abstract：The marginal space is this kind of transitional area space in a city that is located between area units with different characteristics, functions and landscapes. The marginal space takes an especially important place in the changing and developing of a city. Because the marginal space usually has a weak power of social coherence, a weak ability of spatial control, and a public anticrime system with many loopholes. Therefore, some marginal spaces turn into massive areas of growing urban crime. After analyzing spatial characteristics of the general marginal spatial blind area and general requirements of its comprehensive treatment, this paper discusses emphatically spatial characteristics of a special kind of the marginal space, and the city-country fringe.
In the general marginal space, various developing essential factors get mixed up in distribution. Their interacting relationship is quite complicated, and various contradictions are often caused from this situation. Because of the complicated population structure, land use structure, property ownership and person relationship, it's hard to manage and control persons, spaces, wealth and social areas of the marginal space. The local units related should jointly be responsible for the comprehensive treatment of the marginal spatial blind area, and emphasize concentration and enforcement of the treatment.The general requirements of the treatment include coordinating the relationship of population factors, land factors, property factors and social factors.
The city-country fringe is a typical marginal space, in which there is a very complicated interaction situation between city and country.Therefore, the city-country fringe is also a marginal space, which produces crime spatial blind areas easily. The city-country fringe has a dual spatial character. Its constructing environment has both aspects of flourishing and disorder; its social environment has both aspects of vigor and tumult; its cultural environment has both aspects of tradition and decadence. The comprehensive treatment of the spatial blind area in the city-country fringe is a great social project, and emphasizes especially concentration and enforcement.The working focal points of its comprehensive treatment include planning and managing the progress of its construction and development and designing the building of its infrastructure, etc.
