Abstract：Based on the ideas of the distinguished human geographer, Prof. R. J. Johnston, presented in his famous book "On Human Geography", some proble-ms about philosophical basis of Applied Goography in western countries have been discussed in this paper. The three types of Applied Geography, founded respectively on Empiricist, Hermeneutic and Realist Sciences, have their own definition, ideology and research context. There is no unified applied geogra-phy. Geographers can choice any of three types for their different research purposes.
