ANALYSIS ON THE CONSTRUCTION THOUGHTS OF TRADITIONAL RURAL SETTLEMENTS IN CHINA

Abstract:Through the exploration of traditional Chinese cultural thoughts in rural settlement construction, the paper aims to stimulate reconsideration about the modern activities in this field. It begins with the overview of four general characteristics about indigenous construction practices, as view ed from the settlement setting conformed to situation; the spacial integrated structure to convey the cultural significations; the variable lanes and various squares of tow n; the local housing compatible with its setting. Then, the paper indicates the implication for the native worldview of "syncretism between human and nature" in ancient agricultural society, and its extended constructional culture thoughts, which are presented as follow s:the ecological view in harmony with the nature, the shape view in accordance with the troditional social environment, the emotionalism of the affection towards the life, and esthetic sentiment showing the artistic pursuit.
