Abstract Edge city is a new research field in the world. The growth of developing industries always depends on edge cities. In this paper, the edge cities in shanghai are analyzed and some regulations in their spatial distribution are found. The conclusions are as following: 1. Edge cities are inclined to appear in the places more than 20 kilometers away from the center. 2. Although edge cities always grow on the side of main road but rarely on the junction. 3. They are often the products of a new period of economic growth.
