Abstract China's island ports have abundant resources and good geographic conditions. In addition, they are densely-distributed near the developed areas in the Southeast Coast of China. All the conditions can provide new development space for coastal ports system. First, this paper researches the evolution of ports regional combination in Chang-Shan Archipelagos and thinks that there are four stages in the evolution of ports regional combination in Chang-Shan Archipelagos, namely, start stage, developing stage, quickly-developing stage and space-expanding stage. Next, it analyzes the evolutionary patterns of island ports regional combination from the perspective of ports evolution according to the resources strength and location strength of island ports. The researchers hold that the evolution of island ports regional combination is from ‘island-regional leading’ to ‘inter-islands leading’ and then to ‘inter-regional leading’. Three types of evolutionary patterns of island ports, namely, island-regional leading pattern, inter-island leading pattern and inter-regional leading pattern have respectively been concluded. It contends that the evolution of ports regional combination in Chang-Shan Archipelagos is in the transition phase from inter-island disequilibrium concentration stage to inter-island equilibrium spread stage. Finally, this paper gives an further study on the mechanism of ports regional combination. Three operational mechanisms, government behavior mechanism, port-hinterland mechanism and aggregation spread mechanism and competitive-cooperation mechanism have been elicited.
