Abstract The accurate calculation of tourism industry's carbon dioxide emissions is the precondition of setting goals of energy conservation and emission mitigation in certain areas of China. It's also essential to the sustainable tourism development. Existing studies of carbon emissions from tourism industry focus on the emissions at the whole China level, less on those at the provincial level. This paper designs a calculation method for three provinces (Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei) to calculate their carbon dioxide emissions of tourism industry. The method uses "tourist consuming minus coefficient" for reference. The carbon dioxide emissions of Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei keep rising from 591.018 tons to 696.3 tons from 2010 to 2012, and realize an increase of 17.81%, while carbon dioxide emissions of per tourist fall from 40.183kg to 36.065kg. The total amount of carbon emissions of three provinces in tourism industry closely relates to the total size of tourists. The per capita carbon emissions decreased are closely related to the increase of environmental awareness of tourists and the modern energy saving technology innovation. In terms of total emissions from tourism industry, the carbon dioxide emissions of Beijing tourism industry are the highest all the time, and Hebei ranks third from 2010 to 2012, However, Hebei's emissions show sustainable growth. The less number of tourists and the economy of Hebei are closely related to the total carbon emissions of itself. In terms of per capita emissions from tourism industry, Beijing ranks first while Hebei ranks third. The carbon emissions of the vehicle are less compared with planes which determine the total amount of carbon emissions per capita in Hebei, and the per capita carbon emissions of Hebei tourism wholesale, retail, accommodation and catering industry which also play an important role. Beijing' per capita emissions from tourism industry decrease year by year, and Tianjin is characterized by U-shaped variation, but Hebei increases year by year.
