PRELIMINARY STUDY ON ACCULTURATION OF ETHNIC CHINESE IN INDONESIA

Abstract  Indonesia has the largest population of ethnic Chinese among countries in the world.In the last 30 years, Indonesian government implemented a series of assimilation policy, ethnic Chinese adapted themselves to the circumstances, carried forward Chinese traditional culture, assimilated the cultural quintessence of original inhabitants, mixed together with modern western culture, forming a new culture of ethnic Chinese to integrate themselves into the main stream of the society.But Indonesian Chinese always became victim of various social contradictions there, and this resulted in the deepening the racial estrangement which existed originally, unfavorable seriously to the integration among nations.This paper briefly reviews the related reason in history, analyzes that ethnic Chinese in their mode of thinking and code of conduct made positive and initiative contribution to the prosperity and progress of the society there in the aspects of social production, medical work, athletics, mass organizations and religions etc.;points outs also that whether ethnic Chinese may enjoy the right of equality between the nations and may be respected and be safequarded as the status of national minority, the key is the policy, the role and the correct leading with definite purposes taken by Indonesian government.
