Abstract A study is made of allometric growth of urban system by means of fractal idea, and the allometric coefficient is proved to have some sense of fractal dimension. The allometric relationship between the ith city and the jth th city in an urban system is given as Qi∝QjTij and Tij=αi/αj=di/dj,where α is the growth Tij=αi/αj=di/dj coefficiet of Q,and d is its dimension. If one of di and dj is a fractal dimension,Tij can be regarded as of fractal dimension. If one of di and dj is a fractal dimension, αij can be regarded as of fractal dimension. Based on the theory advanced by the authors, the allometric course of Changchun urban system from 1949 to 1988 is analysed using gross value of industrial output as variable, and it is found that ①An urban system meets allometric relationship with fractional dimension under some given conditions;②Sometimes,the fractal allometric relationship degenerates;③Last but not least, allometric models and properties change with social and economic environment. One of the important conclusions is that the fractional allometric growth as an optimum relationship is to the course of urbanization what fractal structure as an optimum organization is to urban spatial system.
