Abstract The historical maps during the first half of the twentieth century were used to analyse the expansion of the core built-area of Beijing city and the built-area of Tianjin city. It was found out that the expansions of the two cities were quite different. The core built-area of Beijing city expanded very slowly and the urban landuse in the urban-rural fringe was even reversed. In contrast, the urban built-up area of Tianjing city expanded quickly. The great difference of urban expansion in the two cities was caused by the differences of city characters, urbanizing driving forces and the imperialism investment policies.
