Abstract Regional economic development becomes a common cognition among all levels of government. GIS technology is now being applied to the process of economic analysis at local, regional and state levels. Decision-makers recognize that GIS technology is an interactive visualization and decisionsupport tool to directly support economic planning. In this article, the author points out the technical supports given by GIS in economic analysis and decision-making based on the analysis of various technologies or approaches, then discusses about how to establish an Information-supporting and Decisionmaking system for the development of Western Regions based on GIS technology, and gives a simple example to illustrate it.
