Abstract After a historical overview on changes of public participation in urban planning and social and institutional environment in Japan after 1950s, this paper provides an analysis on main characters and forms of participatory planning. By illustrating the process and organizational framework in participatory community planning and city master plan, this paper discusses the problems and influence of participatory urban planning, and aims to explore its inspiration of Japanese experience for China.
