Abstract

Since the late of 1970s, as humanistic geographers reintroduced the concept of place into humanistic geography research, place had been one of the core concepts of humanistic geography. However, as the deeply study of place and the huge impact of urbanization and globalization, some humanistic geography scholars have focused on the study of placelessness and non-place, which are caused by the devaluation of place, and the influence they had brought. Customarily, placelessness means the place which loses the meaning, it is less and less possible to have a deeply felt sense of place; while non-place means the mobile space without rootless whose main function is the endless connectivity. On the causes of placelessness on the one hand, it is derived from place destruction, and on the one hand, it benefits from some modern artificial space; meanwhile non-place is considered as the heterogeneous space construction in modern society. However, domestic research of culture geography has not yet focused on the topic related to placelessness and non-place, therefore, the introduction of related foreign research is particularly important. Overall, the research overseas for placelessness and non-place has already achieved certain results, but also have a lot of research deficiency, such as there is no clear analyses of the essential difference between two; while the case study are more concentrated in the post-modern consumption place of metropolis, but neglect the study of village. So the research of placelessness and non-place is still in the exploratory stage, as the related content is still in the fuzzy state, but the results of analysis and introduction of certain achievement will bring domestic place to study a new perspective of theoretical research and practical level of new thinking.
