Abstract Rurality is an important indicator which reflects rural development, reveals its internal difference and measures rural area space. The degree of rurality is the representing evidence of rural regional type differentiation and reflects the multifunctional evolutional tendency of urban-rural space profoundly. What constitutes development and how it should be measured is a very important question. The multifunctional social needs of rural area and building the long-term mechanism and pathway of urban-rural integration development is not only the objective needs of social transition period but the scientific proposition of geographical science improving the rural areal system theory. This paper reveals relevant literatures, analysis of rural research progress and related basic theory and methods deeply; analysis the concept connotation, research methods, and applications associated with scale level. From the relevant literatures, a symptom of the current introspective moment in rural geography has been the creeping back into discussions of questions about the definition and conceptualization of rurality. Based on this, we propose a model concept and research framework, which contains the attribute dimension, the time dimension, and the spatial dimension, tries to reveal the evolution of the concept and connotation of the rurality. On the basis of key aspects of rural studies summarize the main steering and temporal aspects of research in the process of analyzing the microscopic scale, the town, village scale, fully consider the particularity of the rural development and gradation, analysis the rural characteristics of the scales, build rurality space-time evolution patterns of different regions, exploring the inner relation and mechanism of the model. It is expected to break the macro analysis of the technology and method of bottleneck, deepen the related empirical study, in the integration of urban and rural development under the situation of rural reconstruction space system. Then, socialization needs to be strengthened, more intensive and diversified social science rural research despite the continual urban cosmopolitanism and globalism of advanced societies.
