Abstract  Job-housing relationship is one of the most important topics in urban studies. In the last decades Chinese cities have seen the phenomenal rise of job and residential mobility and the home-work separation becomes more acute under the background of institutional transformation. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the spatial and temporal evolution of job-housing relationship among residents of different housing properties from a microscopic scale, which would be conducive to understand the deep-seated mechanism of social spatial reconstruction in Chinese cities. However, so far there has been limited empirical research on it. Based on the perspective of time geography, this paper attempts to contribute to such gap by using a retrospective questionnaire survey data of the suburbs of Shanghai. We divide residents into three groups according to the housing properties and investigate the temporal and spatial characteristics of the changes in jobhousing relationship of residents in the past 20 years. Then we summarize the spatial and temporal evolution pattern of job-housing relationship and establish multiple regression models to analyze its influence factors. The results show that the changes of the job-housing relationship among residents of different housing properties are divided.
