Abstract The requirements for development, satisfaction degree and people's living are essential to social development. The quality of people's life should be regarded as an important criterion to reflect satisfaction degree of residents comprehensively. This study is carried out in Heihe River Basin (HRB) in the Northwest China. An index system of evaluation of life quality is put forward on the basis of "Calvert-Henderson Quality of Life Indicators", which comprise 9 dimensionalities and 12 indicators. Except for a little part of data in this paper is gotten from statistical information, the majority of data come from the life quality questionnaires filled out by the residents in HRB. The Principal Component Analysis was employed in this paper to ascertain the weights of indicators and to study the life quality of the residents in HRB.The results are as follows:the life quality of people living in cities is markedly higher than that of rural residents in HRB, the life quality of the townsmen in the middle reaches is higher than that living in upriver and lower reaches of Heihe River, the life quality of rural resident in HRB displays remarkable discrepancy,the life quality of rural residents of middle reaches is a little higher than that of people living in upriver and lower reaches of Heihe River, and the important factors that influence the life quality of local people living in HRB are income, education and housing.
