Abstract The formation and development of the economic regional pattern are bound by regional environment and economic cost in Northeast China. Based on the analysis of the transportation network process in Northeast China in the past 100 years, the authors inquires into several main characteristics of economic and social development in Northeast China in different time series by combining statistic analysis method with modern GIS spatial analysis method, discusses in detail the spatial polarization and marginalization of population and economy in 37 cities, as well as land utilization changes and urban spatial expansion, and reveals the evolution mechanism of the economic regional pattern and forecasts its general trends in Northeast China. The formation and development of the economic region pattern in Northeast China is due to the dual restraints-regional environment and economic cost. The transportation network process is the foundation and further extends of the spatial expands of the regional social-economic activities. So, the transportation channel system is the carrier of the modern geographical division. Further construction and the development of the synthesis transportation channel system in Northeast China will also deepen the economic regional pattern in the future. Consider of geographical connects among the provinces (prefecture) in Northeast China, the physical characteristics of the cargo flows which take the transportation network as the carriers (the internal recycling flows, the external circulation flows:flow direction, the current capacity, the scope and so on), manifests the basic regional structure relations.In the future, the development pattern of the regional structure driven by the provincial capital city will still be the leads, and manifests the characteristics of the obvious administrative economic region. And then, the evolution tendency performance of the economic regional pattern will be the formation and the development of the four metropolis circles, the southern costal city belt, the eastern economical belt and the new resource base in the eastern Inner Mongolia.
