Abstract In ocean economic area, the coastal zone is very special. Although it is abundant with varied resources, it is exposed to various calamities. Therefore, it is weak in ecological environment due to the influence of many factors. As a result, sustainable development is urgently expected. Jiangsu province is rich in ocean resources, its tidal flat accounts for 30% and its coastal line accounts for 5.3% of that of China respectively. Meanwhile Jiangsu is weak in ocean economy. Its ocean industry production value accounts for 4.4% of the national value, which lags far behind of that of Guangdong (21.7%), Shandong (14.14%), Zhejiang (14.05%) and Fujian (12.68%). That has become a prominent problem to be stressed and urgently solved. This paper, from the perspective of sustainable development, proposes the strategy of attaining the of the coastal zone in Jiangsu sustainable development as well as the major measures to be taken. The conclusions are as follows:1) reinforce seaport construction to foster growth poles for coastal development; 2) develop ocean industry quickly to optimize and promote coastal economic structure; 3) make reasonable use of coastal resources and strengthen coastal environmental protection; 4) perfect coastal legal system and standardize coastal administration; 5) use modern technologies to improve coastal calamity-prevention system.
