Abstract Comparatively, the poverty-stricken areas are faced with a tougher task of balancing development against environmental protection. The sustainable development of such areas will have a greater effect on the development of other regions. With time, space and other factors considered, a few models which are likely to bring about a sustainable development in the poor areas are suggested, such as exploitation of resources, priority to ecosystem, urban development to have precedence, high-tech industrialization to promote development, tourism to have precedence. Constructive ideas and suggestions are provided on the selection of these models in terms of specific locations.
