Abstract The analysis of journey to work data has been an important component in human geography as well as urban transport planning for a considerable period. That importance arose primarily from its rich insight into the daily-life geography of cities.Based on the activity diary survey of Dalian citizens, this article uses the related information such as the distribution of residents and employment chances to elaborate the citizens' commuting features.Commuting tool, commuting time and commuting space are the main points of the elaboration.Dalian citizens take highly motorized tools for journey to work, more than 70% taking motorized tools, only 9.9% going on foot. The mean commuting time is 38.11 minutes. There exists a correspondence between of the length of citizens' commuting time and the city's spatial structure.According to distance-decay,we divide the commuting space into four concentric areas based home, taking 2km,5km, 10km and 15km as the borders. From the inner to the outer, the four areas can be correspondingly seen as the scope of sub-district office influence, the scope of the co re of Dalian City, that of from the core to the suburban and from the core to the outer suburban.Such study builds a bridge between commuting research and urban internal structure study, and offers a dynamic angle for further research.
