Abstract This paper constructs a comprehensive index system to measure the urbanization level of Jiangxi Province. The system covers four dimensions of urbanization including population, economy, sociality and land. Based on this measure system, it further uses entropy method to evaluate the urbanization levels of the counties in the province in 2001 and 2010, and analyzes its spatial-temporal characteristics and the reasons for them. The research findings are summarized as follow. Firstly, the urbanization levels of all counties in Jiangxi have risen in different speeds since 2001, but there has been an increasingly widening gap between them and emerged a trend of polarization. Secondly, there are significant regional differences in the levels of urbanization of Jiangxi Province. Thirdly, such differences result from multiple factors, including the natural condition and resource endowment, the leading ability of the central cities, geographical location and transportation condition and regional development policies and strategies. The urbanization speed of the former is slower than that of the latter. Compared with the adjacent provinces such as Henan and Anhui, in Jiangxi, theeffect of the polymerization of urbanization development is limited. And the spatial pattern of urbanization isnot rational enough, but fragmentized. In order to promote the development and improve the quality of urbanization, it is thus suggested that the policies should point to the enhancement of the radiating and driving ability of the central cities, full use of national development policies, and acceleration of economic development in the counties and improvement of the infrastructure system among them.
