Abstract:Facing with more and more complicated urban problems, one single theory or method is not competent for resolving them. People are now paying more attention to the relationship among urban social structure, economic structure and land use structure in urban studies and the study methodology is heading for synthesis. With the development of GIS technic, the development of interdisciplinarity with GIS and some other subjects is one of the main trends for urban studies. In this paper, the author tried to use a new approach to urban land-use analysis based on GIS and some other economic and sociological methods. Doing a case study in Baini town, Chongyang County, Hubei province in China, the author tried to set up a new method for the study of urban structure. In this study, the author used the concept of demand and supply mostly used in economic field, and did a little modification. The author changed them into the concepts of the degree of demand and supply, which means:the total amount of land use demand and land use supply is one, and the degree of both demand and supply means the percent of this one unit in different location. At the same time, the author modified traditional social questionnaire, and used certain graph for demand's position when doing questionnaire. After gathering both the material of social demand, and land use possible supply, the author used GIS for analysis. By setting up certain model, the author analyzed some most important land uses. After analyzing the relationship between each land use' demand and supply in different locations, the author checked out the hidden problems, and gave some suggestion both for urban structure renewal and land use management. The result shows that the demand of both residential land use and commercial land use is much smaller than supply in the periphery, which means that concentrated development will be mo re suitable for Bini tow n. Secondly, as to residential land use in Bini town, the distribution is quite disorder, and the demand-supply analysis shows that when people select their residential area, they pay more attention to both the location and the environment. Thirdly, as to commercial land use, the trend of concentration is more obvious than others. Lastly, the author did the concept plan for the tow n, and gave some possible suggestion for the management.
