Abstract:In recent years, the plan of commercial space has been developing quickly in large urban areas of China, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, etc.And the commercial spatial researches got more attention among the scholars in China. Meanwhile, the western countries could offer some help in theories and methodologies.This paper briefly retrospected the relative researches on the commercial space in China and the western countries since 1920s.In terms of the researches' contents, it could be divided into two parts: commercial spatial structure and spatial selection, which coexisted with and infiltrated into each other. With the development of methodology, five schools have been formed successively on commercial spatial structure researches in western countries. And the researches of spatial selection consisted of location selection and market analysis. It was also concluded that the theory system and the methodology system had been completed.One important research realm was effect factors of the commercial space, which turned from economic principle into the consumer's and the operator's behaviour,society property,institution framwork and cultural difference.In China, the commercial spatial researches begun since 1980s. Comparatively, quiet lots of achievements were made only in recent 20 years, which piloted the development of commerce industry. But more attention were merely paid to demonstration researches according to pro-theories mainly including the theory of Christaller while more attention have been paid to location selection researches since the 21 century.But on all accounts,little progress of theory or methodology was made. In order to evaluate this kind of researches in China rationally and find out it's deficiencies, comparison was made between our country's and the western countries' corresponding studies in light of the characteristic, content, methodology and conclusion.It was found that there was a large gap between our country and the west in the field, especialy on the aspect of the process, the methodology and the dimension of the researches.On this basis, the trend was probed into in this poper. Meanwhile, it was found that commercial space polarization, commerce suburbanization and virtual commercial space were the important realms of the commercial spatial further studies. Also, it pointed out that physical and social space should be infiltrated into each other during this kind of researches.
