Abstract:Time-geography is a promising study approach facing micro humanistic phenomena directly. How ever its comparatively undeveloped research methods hinder its development. For example, statistics is one of classic methods employed by time-geography, but it is limited in the practice because of some restraining factors such as the precondition about the data probability characters, the self-correlation in time and space, etc. To collect sufficient statistic sample is time-consuming. It is also a problem that scale matching between different kinds of restrictions of the life-history is easy to be ignored. This paper discusses the necessity, possibility and approach of the application of Geographical Information System(GIS) in time-Geography. Until now, the idea that a map is difficult to convey spatial dynamic process that was put forward by Hagerstrand, the founder of time-geography, should be changed. The map supported by now a days GIS can present spatial dynamic process very well. The greatest advantage of GIS, as a modeling and analyzing tool, is that it can be easily adopted to solve different kinds of problems such as the abstract and the specific, the quality and the quantity, the dynamic and the static. The object-oriented philosophy in GIS can flexibly characterize the geographical features and the constraint relationship between feature classes focused on in time-geography. Many progresses have been achieved in the integration of GIS with Spatio-temporal analyses and data mining. The cost of Activity diaries survey often used by time-geography can also be reduced greatly if the survey is conducted on Internet under the help of GIS. High resolution remotely-sensed images can provide life-history analysis of individuals with latest background data. The paper discusses how GIS technology is applied in time-geography in detail. And then the author concluded that the application of GIS in time-geography will widen and deepen the fields of time-geography.
